Back in July, I wrote a post about the new mobile volunteering iPhone app “The Extraordinaries”. In the post, I mentioned that GoodDogz.org had signed up to be part of the pilot program and we were awaiting word of our acceptance.

Well, I’m super excited to announce that we were accepted as part of the pilot program and are now included in the The Extraordinaries iPhone app. The app enables “micro-volunteers” to support nonprofit organizations by doing micro-tasks like tagging photos, uploading images, tagging GPS locations, etc.  through their iPhone. The thought is that you can do good while waiting on a bus, standing in line for coffee or sitting in the doctor’s office – philanthropy in a few minutes.

The GoodDogz.org actions ask users to:

• Help us build a database of dog shelters and rescues in the U.S. by tagging them when the user visits them.
• Sharing information about homeless dogs that need homes.
• Share photos of their own dogs.

There are also actions for organizations like KaBoom!, Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. GoodDogz.org currently has 33 followers but has a goal of 100 followers by the end of October. So if you love dogs and have an iPhone, please download The Extraordinaries free from the iPhone app store and become a micro-volunteer!

The name “Charlie” seems to be a popular choice by young stars such as Natalie Portman, Mischa Barton, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Dogs are becoming increasingly popular with celebrities nowadays, especially those who do not want to get into the “baby scene” just yet! Would you ever name your dog “Sheriff Steve Goldberg”? Please join us for our spooky pooch contest in Vienna, VA, this Wednesday night @ 7PM. We will be meeting in the parking lot in front of Skorpio’s Family Restaurant at 421 Maple Ave. East. Each year, GoodDogz.org hosts our Spooky Pooch costume contest and then everyone marches in the Vienna Halloween Parade. The parade draws over 30,000 spectators each year and the dressed dogs is always a crowd pleaser! The event will be held in Vienna, VA around 7PM on 10/29/08. I just saw this post about a new animal advocacy radio station – Animal Voices. I haven’t listened to it yet, but it looks like it could be a winner. What a cool way to get the word out about animal welfare!
